Minor Toast LP

I finally took some photographs of this “fanclub” release, so I decided to update this old blog entry.

This time another post about a “fanclub” LP. Apparently this was released in 2001 according to the Threatbase website, but two versions must be a decade older, also because Flex! lists it as being from 1991. The LP is released on Toast records and contains some songs from 1982/04/29 at the 9:30 club in DC and a partially live set from 1983/04/02 at the Rollerworks club in LA. The sound quality of the DC show is good and the LA show is acceptable.

I had some serious trouble finding this LP but eventually I managed to pick up a copy. Thus far I found three variations of this LP.

1. Red print on the front and on the back of the cover and greyish/lavender coloured vinyl

2. Black print on the front and red print on the back of the cover and black vinyl

3. Black print on the front and on the back of the cover and black vinyl, spine mentions, the band name, the label name and the year 2001.

So I lied, it is almost two months since my last post, I will try to update a bit more next month.

Almost two years ago, I posted about the tape I picked up from eBay which was originally released in Indonesia. Earlier this year I found an almost similar tape but this time it was released in Malaysia. As I suspected this is also a fanclub release containing the complete discography cd on a tape. Tapes are still much more common in third world countries than cd’s. The tape and the artwork are professional printed, it looks better printed than Indonesian version and also the artwork looks more convincing. Check the scans I made.

Four Old 7”s on a 12”

Four Old 7”s on a 12” is the name of the record at least that is what the spine says. Dischord nowadays calls it “The Year in 7”s”, which makes more sense since they included both Minor Threat 7”s on the CD version.

All the 7”s were originally recorded and released in 1981 and 1982. After selling out the initial pressing(s), Dischord decided to put them together on a 12” to make the songs easily available.

The 12” was originally released in October 1984 and the CD version didn’t came until October 1995. A remastered version of the LP on colored vinyl was released in 2007.

I sort of wished this record, was never made and that Dischord kept pressing the 7”s. But since the price for the 7”s is out of control and I can’t afford them, I am satisfied with this record.

What goes for the Flex Your Head LP with blurry photo cover also goes for this LP, besides the remastered edition on color vinyl; you can barely tell what version is a first press. The current information that I have is inconclusive and your help is appreciated.

Thus far I have found four versions.

The first one has this ordering information on the back and compared with other 12” records released by Dischord, this might be a first press. Also when you put it next to a remastered version, you know notice the sleeve is mostly black and white, while the remastered sleeve has much more grey tone colors.

The 2nd version has no ordering information on the back, also the spine looks different and the labels are completely different. It doesn’t mention Dischord records anywhere; it only shows SRA as the record label, could this be Southern Records? The number on the spine is SRA 9510. Or is it a bootleg?

The first version of remastered edition came on clear vinyl. Only until recently I found out Dischord is still selling this record on colored vinyl, but now it changed to some kind of grey marbled vinyl with spots of red/purple/blue and white. The information on the back is changed too.

Flex Your Head

Maybe you could consider Flex Your Head one of the most important hardcore compilations of the early eighties; it pinned down the essence of the 2nd generation of DC punk bands. Together with This Boston Not LA and All Quiet On The Western Front, Flex Your Head is are the compilation records that everyone should own.

Needless to say I was beyond stoked when I first heard Flex Your Head and what really struck me that none of the bands sucked or at least didn’t interest me. So many good tunes, from so many great bands that stood the test of time with ease.

Long before the CD version came together, Flex Your Head went into his fourth pressing on vinyl already. The CD version comes with a nice sleeve, which you could change yourself, so you basically have four different sleeves to choose from.

Normally it is pretty tough to figure out the pressing info for a Dischord release but luckily, Dischord provided it on the insert of the reissue and in the CD-booklet of Flex Your Head. This counts for the first pressing with the different sleeves but when the Blurry photo came, it all becomes a bit fuzzy. I personally prefer the Flex Your Head with the mock DC flag cover in black, it looks so cool. The first two pressings are hard to find without a decent amount of ring wear, so praise yourself if your copies looks pristine.

Test press:

Unknown amount pressed, but if you look at the other pressings, I would say either 50 or a 100 copies, since most of them were send out as promos. Underneath you can see several different test pressings that were posted on the internet over the years.

1st press:
Violin cover, released in 1982, 4000 pressed.

2nd press:
Wheat field cover, released in 1982, 3000 pressed.

3rd press:
DC flag cover, released in 1982 in cooperation with Alternative Tentacles records in the UK, 2000 pressed.

4th press and subsequent presses:
Blurry photo cover, released in 1985, lots and lots pressed.

Here it becomes a bit hard, to track down the different presses, the oldest one I could find was with the 5.00 dollar price domestically and 6.00 dollar price overseas printed in the lower right corner of the sleeve

Here is another one with a 6.00 dollar price printed in the lower right corner of the sleeve.

I also found this sleeve with 8.00 dollar prince printed in the lower right corner of the sleeve.

Yellow vinyl press:
Blurry photo cover, but on yellow vinyl. I read about 2000 pressed, but no official confirmation from Dischord. This comes with the 8.00 dollar prince printed in the lower right corner of the sleeve but with yellow vinyl instead of black.

Remastered press:
This time they reused the DC flag cover, but changed the colour from black and white to red and white. Remastered the recordings and pressed it on red vinyl.

Which make wonder two things, was Flex Your Head ever released on tape? I have State Of The Union compilation on tape, but I have never seen Flex Your Head. Also if anyone has another variation of the Blurry photo cover, please leave a comment.

Void – Hit And Run/Condensed Flesh LP

This Void LP came out in 2010 and contains the well known Condensed Flesh recordings. Originally released by Eye93 records on a 7″ (see the other post) and on a MCD on Lost And Found records.

Besides the Condensed Flesh recordings it also contains the Hit And Run demo recorded in 1981. Finally there is a live set recorded in 9:30 club in 1983. Apparently this live set is also available on a 7″ but thus far I aren’t able to track down a copy.

I like the sleeve and it comes with printed labels too, I think it is worth your hard earned money. But I wish Dischord would give this a decent release with a cleaned up sound and that find and include the demo recordings for the full length, regardless if it sounds more metal.

Void – Condensed Flesh

One of the early Dischord records I can’t stop listening to is the Faith/Void split. And if I have to choose, I prefer Void over Faith mostly because the Faith LP is better than their side of this split LP. I was always bummed out that prior to whole file sharing came up, the only way to listen to Void was the split LP and the tracks on Flex Your Head compilation. Needles to say I was stoked to find this semi-fanclub 7″ called Condensed Flesh on Eye 95 records.

Lately, I came into contact with the guy who put this out and he was kind enough to share some pressing info.

Test pressing: 5 copies.

1st press: 500 copies on blue vinyl.

2nd press: 500 copies on clear vinyl.

3rd press: 500 copies on green vinyl, 20 copies with some smears in the green vinyl and stamped sleeves.

This green with smears version is shown here.

4th press: 1000 copies on red vinyl.

5th press: 1000 copies on red vinyl, the sleeve is made of nicer paper but the printing job doesn’t look as good as the previous pressings.

This blue copy has the original insert which was included in the first 1000. One side has flyers on it the other side has a couple of VOID live show reviews from local fanzines. As can been seen underneath.

Besides the 3rd press on green vinyl, some other pressings also have some copies with white or black smears in the vinyl. But that information currently isn’t available.
